Scenario

You are sitting with your computer at your desk, eagerly working on your dataset. Next to your laptop you have placed a refreshingly cold soft drink (or a hot delicious coffee). You reach for the printout of a journal paper, bump into the glass and the contents of the glass spill over the keyboard of your laptop.

The laptop shuts down and won’t start up again. The computer is probably broken and all unsaved changes and perhaps all data are lost.

Solution

What to do when this happens:

  1. Turn it off immediately
  2. Turn it keyboard side down to dry
  3. Wait as long as possible before switching it on.

Prevent water damage:

If possible, keep the liquid on a surface lower than the laptop. If no such surface is available, keep it at a reasonable distance from your computer.
