Beria Corpus Naturalistic

Description

This corpus of the Beria-Wagi language of Sudan was compiled during several BA and MA level field methods courses in the winter terms 2014/15, 2015/16, 2018/19 and 2019/20 at the Institute of Linguistics, University of Cologne. Data collection took place in seminar rooms at the Institute of Linguistics (Meister-Ekkehart-Straße 7, 50937 Köln), University of Cologne. Recording sessions were conducted in regular class room situations, within smaller groups of 2-3 students and by individual students as well. The working language was English. For the current collection the autonym Beria was chosen to refer to the language. In earlier data collection (see former LAC) and data processing the exonym Zaghawa is used and for practical reasons it is still kept as an alternative. The collection as a whole was split into four subcollections. This subcollection comprises naturalistic, (semi-)spontaneous speech events and a set of rather complex stimuli-based elicitation sessions (COME & GO Questionnaire, Wilkins & Hill 1993).
