SFB 1252: Project C06

Description

This collection contains the archival data of the project "Prominence in subordinating rhetorical relations(C06)", which is a part of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 1252): Prominence in Language. In phase I, the project developed a formal discourse-semantic model that focussed on describing the aspects of discourse prominence related to the hierarchical structure of discourse created by subordination. The specific goal of the project was to explain why certain rhetorical relations, such as Elaboration and Explanation, tend to establish subordination and lead to the relative reduction of the prominence of subordinate material, while others, e.g. Contrast and Narration, usually function as coordinating relations. In phase II, the goal of the project is to determine if the way in which people plan and structure their speech depends on whether they feel understood and accepted by their interlocutors. In an experimental setting using online chats, the project investigates how the attention of chat participants to various objects being discussed is directed by positive and negative feedback from other chat participants. For a brief introduction to the project, see http://sfb1252.uni-koeln.de/c06.html.
