HOW TO KEEP IT RUNNING - Sustainable software curation

It is often not only research data that represents the results of research processes in the humanities, but also tools and applications that have been developed for the (further) processing of research data. In addition, research data is often made available and reusable at the end of research projects via dynamic databases, websites or agile visualizations. If such dynamic systems are not available and reusable in the long term and as independently as possible, the research data and results associated with them often disappear with them.

Maintaining complex applications is time-consuming and cost-intensive. In order to ensure the operation of software, especially after a research project, software should

- function independently of proprietary systems,

- be based on established and widespread technologies,

- dispense with dynamic components and

- be comprehensively documented.

The earlier sustainable decisions are made within the research process regarding the technology stacks used, software architecture and documentation standards, the better the long-term availability of research data and the dynamic applications and living systems based on them, as well as related research data, can be prepared and implemented.

For optimal and efficient advice and support with regard to sustainable concepts for the long-term protection and operation of research software and living systems, we are available to you in the current situation by e-mail or video conference.
