Publishing with Open Access: Basics

Open and freely accessible results and publications from scientific research processes are a cornerstone of scientific progress. They enable the fundamental reuse of research results, help to identify gaps in knowledge and blind spots within a subject area and represent an essential basis for the development of new scientific questions.

In this context, the term Open Access describes the free accessibility of scientific publications, data and other results in the digital space. It encompasses various models of how open access can be implemented and realized. In principle, open access means that publications and scientific results are freely accessible and reusable for all people.

- freely accessible and reusable,

- free of charge and

- free of charge and, if possible, without technical and legal barriers.

An open access publication can not only increase one's own visibility, but in particular also the further development of research and innovation. In this context, the granting of licenses, e.g. Creative Commons, enables the additional definition of further and more specific usage options.

The publication of publications and research results in Open Access is a logical consequence of the fact that scientific research is generally financed by public funds, provided there are no copyright or data protection barriers.
