HOW TO KEEP IT SAFE - Backup and data security

Preventing data loss is an elementary component of good research data management. Without a functional backup, the loss of data has catastrophic consequences for scientific work. A well thought-out backup plan can prevent this. When designing your own backup strategy, the 3-2-1 rule can serve as a simple basis:

Data should always

- available three times (original and 2 copies),

- stored on two types of media and

- backed up once as an offsite copy.

For example, research data can be stored on the SSD of your own computer and as a copy on a network drive. Many universities also offer storage space on tape drives. This technology is particularly suitable as an offsite copy on a different type of media. Backups should be made regularly and automatically in all scenarios.

Good data backup saves many worries. Ask your local data center about the services available at your location. At the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Cologne, the DCH will support you in setting up a backup concept that corresponds to your work and research situation and makes use of the institutional options provided by the university.
